Evaluating an Automated Analysis Using Machine Learning and Natural Language Processing Approaches to Classify Computer Science Students’ Reflective Writing

AbstractReflection writing is a common practice in higher education. However, manual analysis of written reflections time-consuming. This study presents an automated reflective to analyze CS education based on conceptual Reflective Writing Framework (RWF) and application natural language processing machine learning algorithm. paper investigates two groups features extraction (n-grams PoS n-grams) random forest (RF) algorithm that utilize such detect the presence or absence seven indicators (description experience, understandings, feelings, reasoning, perspective, new learning, future action). The evaluated 74 student essays (1113 sentences) are from final year project reports CS’s students. Results showed can be reliably distinguished by their these used for determining level students’ writing.
